In the spring I offered a free quilting class for the summer not knowing what would come of it. I had 4 ladies sign up and they have almost completed their masterpieces.
All 4 came from different backgrounds–2 teachers, a photographer, and a retired administrative assistant. We had a variety of levels of sewing skills from “Hey–I found my sewing machine” to “I couldn’t find my sewing machine, so I bought a new one” to “I brought my older sewing machine that I’ve been using for years.” One was local to Jesup, one was from Hinesville, and 2 drove for 1 1/2 hours from St. Marys. Two have kids at home, and the other 2 are empty-nestors. Four unique women with the common goal to learn to quilt.
We have spent time talking, laughing, and ripping out mistakes. The ladies have learned a whole new vocabulary, discovered the joy in cutting up fabric to then sew it together with other pieces, and found out that a seam ripper sure comes in handy when you realize you messed up.
Our “class time” took place at my home here in Jesup, but we held some “virtual sessions” via face time, texting and a phone call or 2. We discovered that there is safety in numbers–especially when you forget which fabric comes next.
I have really enjoyed sharing time with these ladies and I will miss our “quilting sessions” because we also discovered the secret of quilters from hundreds of years ago—friendships grow while working on a common goal.
If you missed out on this summer’s group, I may be entertaining doing another group in the fall in the evening. I will give that information out at a later date.
Let me encourage you today to try something new that you have always wanted to do. Find someone who has a skill and learn from them. Have you thought about watercolor painting, knitting, or embroidery? All of us were uniquely created to create. Discover something new–at least attempt it–you may come away with a new passion or as one of the ladies in my class said, “This was a one time thing–my kids will have to fight over this quilt because I’m not doing this again.” LOL!
Such great memories of our quilting group when you taught Linda and I. Beautiful creations ladies. Thanks for sharing. I have always wanted to learn to do pottery. I think I need to look into it. Thanks for the encouragement as always .live and miss you Julie.
I have absolutely loved it! It was so much fun to use my patriotic project on my family room table during the week of July 4th. I also enjoyed meeting and getting to know new friends! Thank you for teaching us!
